My PhD topic is "Improving Interdomain routing using software defined networking SDN". In particular, I am interested in how the Border Gateway Protocol could be replaced while maintaining compatability with autonomous systems (ASes) that still wish to use BGP.My starting point is to consider if BGP reliability and scalability can be improved by treating the Internet as a single AS. The challenge is how to do this in a practical way that can be deployed while maintaining each member ASes autonomy. We believe that SDN can be used as a way to innovate.
